Data Talks: Learning How to Use Local Data to Inform Housing Policy

As part of their regular functions, city and county agencies, community-based organizations, and businesses gather data about people, properties, and transactions. These local data are a valuable source of information about local housing needs and whether a locality’s existing housing policies are effective. But they also come with some challenges.

In Data Talks, a series of mini-webinars, we will tackle a variety of topics related to using local data to inform housing policy. Each 45-minute lunchtime session includes a short presentation from Lab staff or guest experts, a fireside chat featuring practitioners who bring firsthand experience with the topic at hand, and Q&A with webinar participants.

The first five episodes of Data Talks will focus on how cities can:

  • Use local data to shape their housing programs and policies
  • Learn about rental properties via property data, registries, and surveys
  • Survey residents about housing needs
  • Build a real-time homelessness data system
  • Understand housing quality in their community
